As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on a year that has been a whirlwind of chaos, frustrations, and deeply rewarding achievements. It has been a journey filled with lessons and milestones, each leaving its own mark.

The year began with a challenging bout of illness in February, where I truly understood the meaning of “chest tightness” and caught a glimpse of what a heart attack might feel like. It was a sobering experience, yet it deepened my appreciation for health and resilience.

Two visits to Taiwan this year were unforgettable. This vibrant island, a true embodiment of “Chinese modernisation”, surprised me at every turn. Its cleanliness, orderliness, and the warmth of its people left a lasting impression, as did the sophistication of its technology and the refined allure of its shopping centres. Taiwan felt like a glimpse into a future both rooted in tradition and embracing innovation.

Later in the year, I finally ventured back to Japan after COVID-19. I was struck by how urban life there wasn’t as overwhelming as I had once imagined. Kyoto, in particular, charmed me—revealing why so many people cherish it over Tokyo or Osaka. It offered a sense of tranquillity and depth, a city where history and modernity coexist seamlessly.

The crowning achievement of 2024, however, was undoubtedly my PhD. After years of dedication, I passed my viva and completed the corrections—an experience that unfolded with a smoothness I could only have dreamt of. With that chapter closed, a new door appears to be opening, as I prepare to step into the realm of financial services, working with high-net-worth clients in Hong Kong. It’s an exciting prospect, one that fills me with anticipation for the future.

In these final weeks of the year, I found myself revisiting an old companion: Alex Rider. Dusting off the books and graphic novels I collected between 2013 and 2016, I was unexpectedly captivated again. This time, I saw Alex’s world through a more mature lens, understanding his struggles and his heart in a way I hadn’t before. Perhaps that’s what growth feels like—gaining new perspectives after weathering life’s storms and uncertainties.

2024 has been a year of challenges, discoveries, and triumphs. As it ends, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences that shaped me and excitement for the journey ahead. Here’s to the next chapter—welcome, 2025.
